Source - Gerry Field, nephew, Jan 2003: My aunt Winnie was his sister. She was married to a man called Garwood who worked at ICI. She had two children. Her son was Colin, and he was killed in the war. I believe he was in the navy as a wireless operator and his ship was sunk. Her daughter was Leila, whom I know well and how married in later life one Alf Watson. Leila still lives near Stockton.

Dear Michael,

Many thanks for your long,newsy letter. Hope the temperature is more comfortable for you at the moment We had a one night trip to St. Andrew's with friends to visit their daughter at university there.We travelled north in hail,rain, sleet,snow and high winds. The next day was perfect- the warmest,at 11C, in the country. The journey home was spectacular through a snowy,sunny landscape.

Glad your Mum had the same feeling as I had during our 'phone call. It is awonderful thing that you can speak to her on the Internet with no cost restraint. I hope to 'phone her sometime this week.I'm still waiting for help with sending you both the photographs.

I hope you are progressing well with the setting up of your new business. It must be a very stressful time for you. Don't worry about replying promptly-I was just anxious about the emails getting through tto you because of all the problems we have had.

Now to answering yor queries.I presume you only need the name of the town.

Mother Winifred Sanderson Cummings born 16.9.1898. Thornaby-on-Tees married 1.10.1921 Stockton-on-Tees died 16.5.1983. Stockton-on Tees.

Father George Fell Garbutt born 24.8.1898 Ingleby Barwick, Stockton-on Tees. married 1.10.1921 Stockton-on-Tees died 3.3.1958.

Brother George Colin Garbutt born 10.4.1922 Thornaby-on-Tees
Unmarried Presumed death 15.11.1942.

Colin was serving on a minesweeper, H.M.S. Algerine, doring the expedition to North Africa THe landings were over and they were returning home when his ship was torpedoed by an Italian submarine. He was listed as "Missing, presumed killed" so he has no known grave

I hope that gives you the information you need. Thornaby was in North Yorkshire at that time so the registration district would probably be Middlesbrough or Guisborough. Best Wishes Leila.

===========
A Latter Day Saints Ancestral File entry lists a birth/and christening which may be him but it is tenuous: "Thomas Belton, b. 04-11-1833, c. 8- 7-1834 Saint Giles, Cripplegate, London. Father: WILLIAM BELTON Mother: ANN MARIA" May be him, may be not. If it is, then there is another long shot that his parents (Boyds Register) married in 1834 and she is Mary Ann Greenhill ?? - there is an entry under London & Middlesex but the "place" is listed as Cambridge.

There is an Amy S. WILLETTS, niece, 6 years, born Camberwell, Surrey, England, Scholar present at the same address.

No likely FreeBMD birth record yet found for her. No 1881 Census "Willetts" (with an "s") family in Surrey. No "Willetts" found marrying a Belton or Norris in the right time frame. But a Willett does marry:

Marriages Sep 1873
Norris Maria Bethnal Green 1c523
WILLETT Isaac Bethnal Green 1c523

As usual, there are four records on the page so it is not for sure that they married each other. Bethal Green covered part of London and Middlesex and Registers now in Tower Hamlets district of London. Neither person appears in 1881 Census - did they die or emigrate??

I am the youngest daughter of Athol Lindsay Cummings and thought you might
like some extra information for the family tree.

My dad was born on 16 March 1901 and died in March 1968.
He married Muriel Marguerite Shearer of Middlesbrough (she was born in
Dalmuir, near Glasgow on 27 April 1911) on 28 January 1937. Mum died on 9

Listed as William D. Cummings, ?7 years old in 1901 Census and born in Thornaby, Yorkshire

Rita: Died just a week before he was 65. Had diabetes. Clerk of Works, a very good mathematician. Started off at a boliermaker, then they had a strike and he would not strike so was banned from boilermaking so went to school and learnt welding and came back as a welder and then worked his way up. Always wanted to retire to Redcar. Best tenor in north of England. Had a choir and they practsed at the house. He could play organ, piano, harp - very musical.
============
Source - Gerry Field, grandson, Jan 2003:

"William was my grandfather. He was very interested in medical matters, and did indeed work for the ambulance service. He became very ill with diabetes and could no longer work presumably. His wife was Ida Murray, also of Scottish extraction, who was a teacher. He had worked in the ship yards as a plater and boiler maker. He had been unpopular at one time be cause he refused to join the trade union."
============
Source - Florence Edith Cummings nee Stuchbury wrote at the end of her life, some information is reliable, some fanciful. She seems to have had it in for William:

"Will was peculiar. He did no work, beyond belonging to the St. John's Ambulance Brigade, and seemed to spend most of his time sitting on the door-step. Ida, his poor wife became a cleaner in the school where he [who?] used to teach."
